Easiest Ways to Save Energy In Your Home

Whether you’re trying to save money or reduce your carbon footprint, there are a lot of things you can do to improve the energy efficiency of your home. These changes aren’t complicated, and they won’t take up much time—but they will make a big difference in your energy bill over time. Here are some simple ways to save energy:

Replace traditional bulbs with LEDs.

Did you know that 90% of the energy consumed by an incandescent light goes into generating heat, not light? You can save a ton of energy by replacing your old light bulbs with LEDs. LED bulbs use 80% less energy than traditional bulbs, last up to 25 times longer, and are more durable and less likely to break. For every 1,000 hours, a 60W incandescent costs $6.60 to operate, whereas a comparable 12W LED only costs $1.32 to operate.

Get a smart thermostat.

There are a lot of different types of smart thermostats out there, but the one we like best is the Nest. It’s super easy to set up and learns from your habits. After a few days, it will know when you’re home or away and adjust itself accordingly, saving you money on heating and cooling costs. And it has a phone app that allows you to change the temperature at any time—even while traveling!

A smart thermostat can help reduce your carbon footprint by reducing how much electricity is used for heating and cooling throughout the year.

Identify and unplug energy vampires.

Unplugging appliances and electronics when they’re not in use can save you a lot of energy. If it has an on/off switch, turn it off!

If the appliance or electronic device is plugged in and actively charging, unplug it from the wall. That includes things like cell phone chargers, laptop adapters, and even gaming controllers. The exception to this rule would be if you have a timer plug that automatically turns on when it senses power flowing through it (like an alarm clock). In this case, leave those plugged in while they’re charging up so they’ll work properly when needed next time around.

Reduce appliance use.

There are a number of ways you can reduce your appliance electricity costs, but the most important thing to do is turn off appliances when not in use. If you have a dryer, make sure it’s clean on the inside and outside. A full lint trap hinders your dryer’s ability and wastes electricity with each subsequent session. You should also consider buying energy-efficient appliances if yours are old or don’t work well. Consider purchasing an Energy Star-rated refrigerator or water heater to save even more money!

Use less hot water.

Did you know that washing your dishes in the dishwasher is much more efficient than handwashing? Dishwashers use less water overall and less hot water! You can save even more energy by using a cold water setting to wash laundry and by reducing the temperature of your hot water heater.

Lastly, taking shorter showers is a great way to save water and electricity. Have you ever timed yourself in the shower? The average American spends about 10 minutes in the shower. At 2.5 gallons of hot water per minute, that’s 25 gallons for the average shower!

Even small changes can make a big difference in your energy bill.

Even small changes can make a big difference in your energy bill. The more energy you use, the more money you spend.

If you aren’t watching TV, turn it off instead of leaving it on standby mode (you’ll save around $5 per year). Or if you don’t need the air conditioning or heat running during certain times of day (while nobody is home), adjust them accordingly for better savings (nearly $40 per month).

We hope this article has helped you gain the knowledge and motivation to make your home more energy efficient. As we mentioned above, even small changes can make a big difference in your energy bill.
